Psi Chi has chartered
more than 1,100 chapters at colleges and universities across the United States, Canada,
Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Ireland, New Zealand, Egypt, Guatemala, and Russia.
Learn what you can do to start a chapter at your school. The requirements for the university, departments, students, and alumni are listed below.
- be fully accredited as a 4-year or
senior college-level institution by a national or regional accrediting agency
- offer baccalaureate and/or graduate
degrees in psychology
- require majors to take courses that foster a scientific understanding of the breadth of psychology
- require a minimum of 3 semester credit hours or equivalent in both research methods and statistics courses (or a semester 4-credit course that integrates the two) for psychology majors and graduate students
- have an active, organized group that
has been in existence for at least 1 year, such as a psychology club,
research team, or similar organization
- provide experiential learning
opportunities such as research, internships, service learning, or field
- have a minimum of two full-time faculty
members holding a doctoral degree in psychology or a closely related field in
residence in the department of psychology
- have one of these faculty serve as the
faculty advisor and be a member of Psi Chi or willing to join
- have a minimum of eight students eligible
for Psi Chi membership (those who are already members of Psi Chi do not count)
who are currently enrolled in the university
- agree to hold an induction ceremony
that all charter members attend
- be enrolled as a major or minor in a psychology program or a program psychological in nature
- have completed at least 3 semesters or equivalent of full-time college coursework
- have completed at least 9 semester credit hours or equivalent of psychology courses at their current school
- have earned a cumulative GPA that is in the top 35% of their class (sophomore, junior, or senior) compared to their classmates across the entire university or the college that houses psychology (minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4-point scale)1
- have a minimum 3.0 GPA average for psychology
- be accepted into and enrolled in a psychology or closely related graduate program
- have completed at least 9 semester credit hours or equivalent of graduate psychology courses in that program
- have an overall GPA of at least 3.0 in all graduate courses including psychology courses
- meet their graduate program's requirements (e.g., if specific courses require an A or B, students must meet those requirements even if their cumulative GPA is above 3.0)
- have graduated before the school had a
chapter of Psi Chi approved and installed
- have met the current membership
standards based on their final transcript
may only have one chapter of Psi Chi; however, they may apply for affiliate
chapters at distinct campuses that also offer psychology degrees and meet all
chapter application requirements. Students who join Psi Chi through affiliate
chapters will be full members of Psi Chi.
Grading systems and
psychology programs in different countries will vary. The Psi Chi Executive
Director will work with individual faculty advisors at universities outside the
United States to determine how the eligibility requirements described above can be met.
Submitting an Application
The faculty member
who agrees to serve as the chapter’s faculty advisor is responsible for filling
out the application and handling all aspects of the submission process. If you
are a student, you should discuss your interest in starting a Psi Chi chapter
at your school with the chair of the Psychology Department. The faculty members
in your department will need to determine if your school meets the minimum
requirements for a charter and if they are willing to support a Psi Chi chapter

The Psi Chi Board of
Directors reserves the right to review the academic mission and character of
the institution submitting an application for a Psi Chi charter.
Every United States Psi Chi chapter is required by law to have an EIN (tax ID number) from the IRS. The Central Office will apply for that number on your chapter’s behalf once your chapter is approved. If your school will not allow your chapter to have a separate EIN, please contact Membership Services Director Lisa Norman at email@example.com.
