Rocky Mountain Regional Fall Letter

Dear Psi Chi chapter advisor,

Greetings for the fall! I hope your semester has started well. I have a great deal to share with you about the upcoming RMPA meeting in Boise, ID, as well as Psi Chi news.

First, I want to thank our regional steering committee members for their efforts last year: Aaron Richmond, PhD (Metropolitan State University at Denver), Rona McCall, PhD (Regis University, CO), and Danette Stark, student member (Colorado Mesa University). I also want to welcome our new steering committee members: Krista Bridgmon, PhD (Colorado State University–Pueblo), Elizabeth List, PhD (Northwest Nazarene University, ID), and Steven McKinley, student member (Colorado Mesa University). As we work on planning Psi Chi programming for RMPA next April, please feel free to get in touch with any of us for suggestions.

On to Psi Chi News:

  1. Our regional Rocky Mountain Psi Chi Facebook page is growing. Please join and forward this link to your student officers and members, so they can be connected, have a voice in programming at RMPA, and receive reminders about awards and grants. http://www.facebook.com/groups/149411341813850/
  2. Check out Psi Chi’s Participate in Research page, a great place for students to participate in research projects and post their own studies.
  3. This is my last year as regional vice-president of Psi Chi, so it’s time to help your chapter consider nominations for your future regional VP. Any previous steering committee member is eligible to be nominated. If you have any questions about the work of Psi Chi regional Vice-President or serving on Psi Chi’s Board, please feel free to contact me.
  4. Volunteer to participate in the Open Science Collaboration Reproducibility Project. Psi Chi is partnering with the Open Science Collaboration to give chapter teams an opportunity to contribute to an open, large-scale, collaborative research project estimating the reproducibility of psychological science. Contributing teams conduct replications of published studies following a protocol established by the Open Science Collaboration. Team members earn authorship on the publication of the results aggregated across dozens of replication projects.
  5. Psi Chi’s Distinguished Lecturer at RMPA April 9 to 11, 2015, in Boise will be Dr. Tom Pyszczynski. The title of his talk is "Thirty Years of Terror Management Theory: From Genesis to Revelation.” This should be a fun and interesting talk, and Psi Chi advisors will have an opportunity to meet and speak with Dr. Pyszczynski at the Advisors’ Appreciation Luncheon.
  6. Let your students know that Dr. Eddy Ameen from the American Psychological Association of Graduate Students (APAGS) will once again join us for RMPA to present several workshops about grad school and careers in psychology.
  7. Join us for the Advisor Appreciation Luncheon at RMPA 2015 in Boise. As a way of saying "thank you” to the chapter advisors in the Rocky Mountain region, the Psi Chi Central Office annually hosts an advisor luncheon at RMPA. This will be an RSVP/invitation-only event, and more information will be forthcoming. It was great fun last time, and I look forward to enjoying downtown Boise next spring!

I hope that you will pass on our news to your chapter members and that we will see you at RMPA! The best way to contact me is via e-mail at sbecker@coloradomesa.edu Please feel free to send any questions, concerns, or comments. I look forward to working with you over this next year!

Take care,

Susan Becker, PhD
