Get to Know Your Southwestern Regional VP

What are your hobbies?
Reading mystery/crime novels, Atlanta Braves baseball, cooking/eating, and drinking wine!

What is the best trip you’ve ever taken?
It’s a tie among trips to France (Paris and the Dordogne River Valley), Italy (Tuscany and Cinque Terra), and Canada (driving through the Canadian Rockies in the summertime).

What is your favorite food?
I enjoy lots of different foods, but the "go to” meal is beef tacos.

What sort of student were you?
As an undergraduate, I was a dedicated, serious student, as I knew I had to be to go on professionally.

Who is favorite psychologist?
Cannot really say, but I think for psychology, in general, Albert Bandura and Julian Rotter have been very influential, and there’s something about Albert Ellis’ Rational Emotive Therapy that rings true, although I am not a clinician. In my area of primate behavior, and outside of my academic family, Irwin Bernstein (University of Georgia) has been most influential, especially early in my career.

What are three words that best describe you?
Dedicated, reflective, sincere.

What is your favorite class to teach?
I teach Physiological Psychology every semester, so that is one favorite (most of the time), and I also like Health Psychology, which is only every other year.

What is the last book you read?
The last psychology book I read was the textbook for my summer research methods course, a course that I am teaching for the first time in about 28 years—the text was Beins (2013)
Research Methods: A Tool for Life. I’m more of a journal reader than a book reader when it comes to psychology.

With respect to fiction, I am almost finished reading Ann Patchett’s State of Wonder.

What is your favorite band?
Rolling Stones
