2007 British Studies Program: July 6 - August 5, 2007

2/14/2007

The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) will again offer psychology students an opportunity to study psychopathology in London through a four-week course offered through the British Studies Program. To get a brochure and application for the program, send your name and mailing address to StudyAbroad@usm.edu.

The course carries six hours of undergraduate or graduate credit and will be offered from July 6–August 5, 2007, in London. USM offers the course through a consortium of 12 Southeastern schools. Last year about 200 students took a course through the program, which is one of the largest London-based international programs in the U.K.

Students participating in Psychology will focus on contrasting the United Kingdom and the United States with regard to topics in psychopathology. Designed to introduce students to diverse topics in behavioral psychology including the history of the treatment of mental disorders, addictive behaviors, criminal profiting and legal issues pertaining to commitment and the insanity defense, this course will meet in London and Edinburgh, Scotland.

You can get financial aid just as if this were a course you were taking in the U.S. You apply through your local financial aid office. Last year students from 20 universities took one of you British Studies courses and all had no difficulty transferring the course back to their own universities. There are no prerequisites for this course.

We stay in central London in King's College at one of their dormitories. The rooms are quite small, but everyone gets a private room with fridge and private path. Everyone has access to a shared kitchen. While few folks do a lot of cooking, the kitchen is handy. The dorm has a large courtyard that is the social center of the program. Students quickly make friends with the folks in their class as well as students from across the country.

The dorm is on Stamford Street, a hundred yards or so from Waterloo Station. The central location puts you just a few minutes' walk from Trafalgar Square, Leicester Square, and the theater district. Most folks walk when they're headed to central London, it's so close.

The cost for the program is $4999, not including food or spending money. While the amount may seem high, this price includes tuition, air travel, and lodging. Student loans and scholarships can be applied to the cost of this program. The International Programs office at USM is more than happy to provide you with any information regarding financial aid.

Feel free to contact us with any further questions regarding this course of the program in general. Full information about the program can also be found through the following website:
