4th ANNUAL PSYCHOLOGY SYNERGY CONFERENCE

State College of Florida in Venice, Florida will be the host of the fourth annual National Psychology Synergy Conference on Nov. 6 and 7, 2009. The event is co-sponsored by Psi Beta and Psi Chi. Psi Beta is the national honor society in psychology for community colleges. The State College of Florida Chapter is the Psi Beta host. Psi Chi is the International Honor Society in Psychology and the Psi Chi Chapter at UCF Cocoa are the co-hosts. The conference has been designed for students, professionals, businesses, and community members. The theme this year is “issues in human sexuality.” go here.

NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION GRADUATE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP

The National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) is one of the most prestigious science and engineering fellowship programs in the USA. Awardees are provided three years of graduate school support. Fellows receive a $30,000 annual stipend, a $10,500 annual education allowance, a one-time $1,000 international travel allowance, and access to TeraGrid supercomputing facilities.

The program ensures the quality, diversity and vitality of the next generation of U.S. scientists and researchers. The GRFP is for students in the early stages of graduate careers who are seeking research-based master's or PhD degrees in NSF-supported disciplines. Applicants should have completed no more than 12 months of graduate study and must be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or permanent residents before the application deadline. Women, minorities, and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply.

The application period opens in August at www.fastlane.nsf.gov/grfp/ and closes in November. For information concerning benefits, eligibility, and tips, applicants should visit www.nsfgrfp.org .and www.nsf.gov/grfp . Faculty with significant research experience and interaction with graduate students are encouraged to register as panel reviewers for the NSF GRFP at http://panelists.asee.org . Selected panelists will be invited for a three-day review session in the Washington, DC, area in February.

Since 1952, NSF has funded more than 43,000 Graduate Research Fellows. President Obama has promised to triple the number from about 1,000 to 3,000 per year by 2012.

NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION EAST ASIA AND PACIFIC SUMMER INSTITUTES

The National Science Foundation (NSF) East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes for U.S. Graduate Students (EAPSI) is a flagship international fellowship program for developing the next generation of globally-engaged U.S. scientists and engineers knowledgeable about the Asian and Pacific regions. The Summer Institutes are hosted by foreign counterparts committed to increasing opportunities for U.S. researchers to work in research facilities and with host mentors abroad. Fellows participate in eight-week research experiences at host laboratories in Australia, China, Japan (10 weeks), Korea, New Zealand, Singapore and Taiwan from June to August. The program provides a $5,000 summer stipend, round-trip airfare to the host location, living expenses abroad, and an introduction to the society, culture, language, and research environment of the host location.

The program is for U.S. graduate students pursuing studies in fields supported by NSF. Women, minorities, and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be enrolled in a research-oriented master's or PhD program and be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents by the application deadline. Students in combined bachelor/master degree programs must have matriculated from the undergraduate degree program at time of application.

MEMBERSHIP FEE INCREASE

In order to continue the numerous benefits of membership, the Psi Chi Board of Directors has approved an increase to the lifetime membership fee. The last increase in membership fees was in 2000. The new membership fee will be $45 and began July 1, 2009. Membership registrations postmarked after July 1, 2009, that do not reflect the new membership fee (regardless of induction date listed), will be returned to the chapter for resubmission with the correct fees. .
