Check out Charities at Guidestar.com
The Central Office has received a number of calls and emails from chapters asking about charities contacting them out of the blue for support. Has this happened to you? Did you wonder if they were “on the up and up?” The website Guidestar (www.guidetstar.org) is a great source to find answers to your questions, and determine if your chapter should get involved. Guidestar gathers critical information about non-profit organizations, including mission statements, programs, goals, accomplishments, financials and more, and makes it available for free to interested parties. It can help you answer important questions like how much the charity spends on operating expenses (the less the better!) and specific details about their programs. Please note that all charities on Guidestar are IRS designated non-profit organizations, so if the organization you’re researching cannot be found on the site, you need to ask to see their IRS letter of determination. Got more questions about this or other as pects of fund-raising? Contact Michele Rumpf, Psi Chi’s Chief Operating Officer at michele.rumpf@psichi.org.
