Celebrating Psi Chi’s 80th Anniversary

by Lisa Mantooth, Executive Officer and Chief Operations Officer -

Category: Editor's Column

On September 4, 1929, Psi Chi was founded at Yale University. It is hard to believe that this organization has served its members for 80 years. Psi Chi members have enjoyed 80 years of opportunities thanks to the many faculty advisors who have served at the chapter and society level. It takes time and initiative to serve as faculty advisor of a Psi Chi chapter. It also takes a time commitment and a love of the organization to serve on the Board of Directors. It is through the Board that many of the benefits to Psi Chi members are initiated. The contributions made by Psi Chi faculty advisors have made the organization what it is today.

Recently I had the privilege of attending APA in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I am always impressed and proud of our members’ accomplishments, and I enjoyed the opportunity to speak with many of you during the conference. I am always amazed at the research that Psi Chi members are involved in and the processes used to complete that research. Psi Chi members are the best of the best, and I was honored to be present at the Psi Chi Award ceremony to recognize our members for their accomplishments. Congratulations to ALL of our members!

If you have not heard, Psi Chi has a new name: Psi Chi, Th e International Honor Society in Psychology. Over the coming months, you will see the beginning of the re-branding of Psi Chi. Th is rebranding will cover everything from our publications to our merchandise, chapter supplies, and the Psi Chi website.

While we are proud to see this come to fruition, it will take time before all of the rebranding is finalized. There are many steps that will occur and with a limited number of staff at the Central Office, these changes will take many months complete. I hope that each of you will have patience with us as we make this transition from National Honor Society to International Honor Society.

Some products, such as graduation regalia, may take longer to update from National to International. Other items, such as the brochure, poster, website, membership cards and certificates will be updated very soon.

On the subject of new merchandise, the Central Office is excited to announce a contest to develop a new design for a Psi Chi T-Shirt. See page 12 for details of this contest and how to enter. I encourage your chapter to get involved and submit a design for the T-shirt.

Happy 80th Anniversary Psi Chi!!!
