Psi Chi would like to thank Allyn & Bacon Publishers for sponsoring the 2001 research award competition. Cash awards were provided by Allyn & Bacon to the winners as follows: $500 for first place, $300 for second place, and $200 for third place. This year's first-place winner is Jennifer A. Slezak of Earlham College for her paper entitled "The Role of the Visuo-Spatial Sketch Pad in Mental Arithmetic." The second-place winner is Danielle Marie Haynes of Metropolitan State College of Denver for her research entitled "The Generation Effect and Item-Source Memory: Evidence Against the Tradeoff." The third-place winner is Allison J. Dickson of Southwestern University for her paper entitled "Eminem Versus Charley Pride: Race, Stereotypes, and Perceptions of Rap and Country Music Performers."

Jennifer A. Slezak, the first-place winner, is the daughter of Jon and Alice Slezak. Both are teachers in Royse City, Tex. Ms. Slezak also has two brothers. Matt teaches high school mathematics, and Dan is a junior at the University of Detroit Mercy.
     Ms. Slezak grew up in Greenville, Mich., and graduated from Greenville High School. She attended Earlham College and in May 2001 received a BA in mathematics and psychology. While at Earlham, she worked in the Admissions Office and played flute in the orchestra and the flute choir. She enjoys playing volleyball, watching hockey, playing the piano, reading, and baking.
     Ms. Slezak is currently living in Mt. Pleasant, Mich., and will begin graduate work in the clinical psychology program at Central Michigan University in August. Her interests in psychology are still widely varied. Ultimately, she hopes to have her own practice after obtaining a PhD.

The second-place winner, Danielle Marie Haynes, is a 22 year-old student who graduated in May 2001 from Metropolitan State College of Denver with a degree in psychology and a minor in business. Ms. Haynes moved from California to Denver, Colo., about three years ago. After five colleges and countless majors, she finally found her home in psychology. Ms. Haynes's particular area of interest is cognitive psychology. Her aspirations include earning a PhD in cognitive psychology and eventually teaching at the college level. If her work and school schedule permits, she enjoys reading a good book, scrapbooking, and arts and crafts projects.

Allison J. Dickson, the third-place winner, is a senior from Temple, Tex. She currently attends Southwestern University in Georgetown, Tex., and will graduate in May 2002 with a double major in psychology and English and a minor in philosophy. Ms. Dickson hopes to attend law school beginning in the fall of 2002.
     She has been involved in numerous activities on campus, serving as treasurer of both Southwestern's Psi Chi chapter and the chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, an international English honor society. She also serves as vice-president of finance for her sorority (Delta Delta Delta), vice-chair for the Student Foundation, and president of Cardinal Key (a national honor society). Ms. Dickson is also a member of Alpha Chi and serves as a student representative for the university's Strategic Planning Committee.
     Ms. Dickson has recently been recognized by Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges, and has been named one of Southwestern University's Outstanding Student Leaders. Finally, she has been on the Dean's List every semester. She also enjoys spending time with her family and friends and is an avid sports fan.
