The chair of the Psi Chi/J. P. Guilford Undergraduate Research Awards Committee, Christopher Koch, PhD, has announced the winners of the 2001-02 Guilford Award competition. The first-place winner is Stephanie Parks of Wake Forest University for her paper entitled "Overpromising and Overcompensating: Explaining the Planning Fallacy." The second-place winner is Eric P. Green of Bucknell University for his paper entitled "Adolescent Mental Health: Universal and Culture-Specific Opinions of Mental Health Professionals, Parents, and Adolescents." The third-place winner is Rebecca Anderson of Albion College for her paper entitled "The Influence of Relational Variables and Participant Perspective on Perceptions of Fairness in the Justice System." Psi Chi congratulates these 2001-02 winners of the Guilford Awards and wishes them continued success. Cash awards were as follows: $1,000 for first place, $650 for second place, and $350 for third place.

Stephanie Parks, the first-place winner, was graduated summa cum laude from Wake Forest University with honors in psychology. Ms. Parks is starting medical school this fall at the University of South Florida College of Medicine. Her primary research interests are judgment and decision making, particularly social and medical decision making.

The second-place winner, Eric P. Green, is originally from Harrisburg, Pa. Mr. Green was graduated with honors from Bucknell University in May 2002 with a BA in psychology. In the fall of 2002, he will begin the clinical-community PhD program at the University of South Carolina, where he plans to study child clinical and forensic psychology. In addition, his interest in cross-cultural psychology was fostered during a semester abroad with Semester at Sea, which allowed him to travel and study in 11 countries. Ideally, Mr. Green plans to continue to develop his secondary interest in cross-cultural psychology.

Rebecca Anderson, the third-place winner, is from Royal Oak, Mich., and was graduated from Albion College in May 2002. Starting in the fall of 2002, Ms. Anderson will be a graduate student at Boston College, working toward her PhD in social psychology and conducting research on intergroup relations and stereotyping and prejudice issues. At Albion, Ms. Anderson was president of the Psi Chi chapter, alumni chair of the Mortar Board chapter, and a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi. She was also awarded the Kirsten D. Metalonis Summer Research Fellowship (2001) and the Heston Outstanding Senior Psychology Student Award (2002).
