The officers and members of the Southwest Texas State University Psi Chi chapter would like to nominate John Davis, Ph.D., for the Regional Faculty Advisor Award for the Southwestern Region. As our advisor, Dr. Davis takes an active role in our chapter and encourages us to excel. He has been our faculty advisor since 1996, and he is the force that has been instrumental in making our chapter what it is today.
     Dr. Davis is the champion of our chapter in the SWT Psychology Department. He encourages the other professors to support Psi Chi, whether by announcing our meetings in their classes or by attending our induction ceremonies, mixers, and other functions. Last semester, Dr. Davis was a m ember of a committee that requested and received a grant, which was then used to buy two computers for our; Psi Chi chapter.
     Dr. Davis has fulfilled his role as an advisor while helping Psi Chi officers and members fulfill their role as leaders. He has encouraged us to develop ourselves more fully as leaders. He has done this, in part, by passing on relevant articles and information. He has also attended the SWT Leadership Conference with Psi Chi officers. This action, more than anything else, has shown us that Dr. Davis is a great leader who encourages others to succeed as well.
     Through Dr. Davis' encouragement, our chapter held its First Annual Psi Chi Conference this year. The conference, entitled "Futures in Psychology," was held in September of 1999 and featured three guest speakers: Psi Chi National President-Elect Jesse Purdy, Ph.D., of Southwestern University; Eddie Vela, Ph.D., of Chico State University; and John Edens, Ph.D., of Sam Houston State University. At our request, Dr. Davis agreed to speak on the topic of International Psychology. Without Davis' support, our chapter would not have been able to hold such a successful conference.
     In addition to being our advisor, Dr. Davis supervises many psychology students on their independent research projects. Most recently, he supervised Psi Chi member Sarah Miller on her research entitled "Stress and the College Student: Does it Affect Parenting Style?" At Dr. Davis' encouragement, Sarah applied for the Psi Chi Undergraduate Research Grant and presented her research at the 1999 Texas Christian University Psi Chi Conference and the 1999 Southwestern Psychological Association Conference. It seems that Dr Davis is constantly encouraging us to investigate the ideas we are interested in and push ourselves toward excellence.
     Dr. Davis is active in the Southwestern Psychological Association. He has twice been elected as the Texas Representative to the SWPA Executive Council. He has also served as the Program Chair, and has been nominated for SWPA President. Over the years he has co-authored SWPA presentations with more than 40 students. Some of these research presentations were later published with students as co-authors.
     Additionally, Dr. Davis is very active in international psychology. He has lived and worked as a psychologist in both Europe and Asia, publishes his work in both English and German, and shares this interest with his students. In 1994 and 1995, he took groups of students on summer study abroad programs to Canterbury, England. He has presented his research at international conventions in more than 20 countries around the world. Dr. Davis served in a leadership capacity in several organizations in international psychology. Most recently, he served as the Chief Executive Officer (Secretary-General) of the International Council of Psychologists. He founded and directs the Center for International Psychology at SWT.
     We would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Davis for the leadership and direction he has provided our chapter. If anyone deserves to win the Psi Chi Regional Faculty Advisor Award, it is Dr. Davis. We look forward to many more years of having Dr. Davis as our advisor!
