Psi Chi Workshop: "A Self-Assessment Tool for Measuring Readiness for Graduate Study in Psychology"
12:00 noon - 1:30 p.m., Jefferson
Chair: David Foster, University of Massachusetts Amherst Psi Chi Chapter
Participant: Robert Youth, Dowling College (Psi Chi President-Elect)

In this workshop, students will have the opportunity to learn how to assess their own preparedness for graduate study in psychology. The self-assessment workshop will show students how to "grade" themselves with respect to such things as grade-point averages, course work completed as an undergraduate, the value of non-objective criteria, traits that are differentially valued, etc. Interactive materials will be provided.

Psi Chi Distinguished Lecture: "Taking the Lab to the Field: Psychophysiological Studies of the Effects of Social Stress on Health"
1:45 - 3:15 p.m., Jefferson
Speaker: Elizabeth Brondolo, St. John's University
Chair: Vincent Prohaska, Lehman College, City University of New York (Psi Chi Eastern Vice-President)

Racial disparities in health are a matter of serious national concern. Recently investigators have suggested that social stressors, including racism and low socioeconomic status, may contribute to health risk. However, measuring exposure to these stressors and evaluating their effects on health is a significant challenge. We have been conducting a program of research to investigate the effects of social stress on mood and health. Our research team has conducted 6 studies in which we have traveled to different community sites and used surveys, and/or automated diaries and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring to understand the effects of social stress on daily life experiences and cardiovascular health. These studies illustrate the ways in which basic research conducted in community settings can shed light on important social problems.

Psi Chi Symposium: "Ethics in Teaching, Practice, and Research"
3:30 - 5:00 p.m., Jefferson
Chair: Nicole Costigan, University of Massachusetts Amherst Psi Chi Chapter
Discussant: Vincent Prohaska, Lehman College, CUNY

Teaching Ethics via the Case Method: Cases for Use in Child Psychology Classes. Tara Kuther, Western Connecticut State University
Ethics in Professional Practice: Planning for Your Future. Paul Finn, Saint Anselm College
Faculty-Student Research Contracts. Miguel Roig, St. John's University, Notre Dame College

Ethics education has been recognized as a critical component of the psychology curriculum. However, instruction in ethics often occurs tangentially to the core information in psychology courses, typically as a comment in discussions of research methodology and clinical training. In an effort to expand ethics instruction beyond current traditional coverage, panel members will introduce some new ideas and approaches to this important area. Dr. Kuther will present the results of a study in which the introduction of a set of case studies is evaluated for their effect in increasing students' sensitivity to ethical issues in applied psychological research with children. Dr. Finn will address the interface of ethics with licensure and practice by providing an overview of current trends in professional ethical misconduct based on his extensive experience as a licensing board member for the state of New Hampshire and a fellow of the Association of State and Provincial Licensing Boards. Dr. Roig will introduce a prototype Faculty-Student Research Contract that can be used as a tool for preventing possible conflicts that can arise from dysfunctional faculty-student research collaborations and for training in the responsible conduct of research. Dr. Prohaska will lead the discussion.

Chair: Jennifer O'Brien, University of Massachusetts Amherst Psi Chi Chapter

Resources and Recognition: How Psi Chi Promotes Student Research. Virginia A. Mathie, Psi Chi National Office (Psi Chi Executive Director)

The Outcome: Responses From Psi Chi Alumni. Joseph Ferrari, DePaul University

Psi Chi has become a major funding source for undergraduate students conducting research. However, it also has many programs that reward excellence in research by both undergraduate and graduate students, and that encourage the dissemination of research. Individual chapters create environments that encourage their members to excel, not only in research, but also in leadership, service, and scholarship. This panel examines specific ways that Psi Chi supports students and contributes to their success.
