Memory can be based on retention of specific details of previous experiences or on retention of more general or abstract information. Questions concerning the specificity of memory are especially pertinent to the analysis of priming, a form of implicit memory, and memory distortion, where inaccurate recollections often involve retention of general but not specific information. This presentation will provide a cognitive neuroscience perspective on the specificity of memory, considering results from neuroimaging and neuropsychological studies of priming, encoding, and memory distortion.
