Psi Chi Invited Address: "Culture and Intelligence"
10:15 - 11:15 a.m., Salon E, Oregon Ballroom
Speaker: Robert Sternberg, Yale University
Chair: Michael D. Hall, James Madison University (Psi Chi Western Vice-President)

Distinguished Member Presentation & Reception
At the beginning of the session, Psi Chi will award both Robert Sternberg and Elizabeth Loftus Distinguished Member status for career contributions to the field and to Psi Chi as a society. Meet both new members during a brief reception directly following Dr. Sternberg's talk in the hospitality suite.

Synopsis:
Intelligence is often measured in a way that assumes that it is exactly the same thing cross-culturally and multi-culturally. The result typically is that individuals from developing countries, or from cultural groups that are socioeconomically disadvantaged, look somehow "less smart" than those from developed countries or higher levels of socioeconomic status. In this talk, I will argue that although the basic mental structures and processes underlying intelligence are the same, the ways in which they should be tested differ. Assuming that "one test fits all" leads to false conclusions about people's intelligence. I will present a model that takes into account multi-and cross-cultural diversity.
