NSF/REU $30,000 Grant Program (2004-05)

1/25/2005

Psi Chi is continuing its partnership with the National Science Foundation (NSF) to enable Psi Chi members to participate in Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU), NSF's summer research program. This is the fourth year of Psi Chi participation in the program, and the honor society has allocated another $30,000 for six grants of $5,000 each to fund Psi Chi members who qualify. Psi Chi provides these grants for its members to conduct research at participating institutions that support undergraduate research through the NSF/REU grant program.

The following NSF/REU sites have stated that they are willing to participate with Psi Chi to support an additional student who is a Psi Chi member. Contact the individuals listed below to learn more about their NSF/REU programs:

Through the REU program, NSF provides a stipend to each participating student to cover expenses for a 10-week stay, and support to the institution hosting the student. Students acquire sophisticated research experience and also gain a clear picture of life in graduate school. After completing an NSF/REU program, students are able to obtain strong letters of recommendation from top researchers in the field. Such experiences and benefits have launched more than one career.

The Psi Chi National Council appropriated funds sufficient to support six Psi Chi students to participate in the REU program. Psi Chi students who are interested in participating in projects on the REU sites are encouraged to submit an application through the specific NSF/REU program of interest. The site director of the REU site is responsible for final selection of the Psi Chi student.

Psi Chi has contacted the site directors of the REU sites to determine if they would be willing to host one or two additional students who are members of Psi Chi. Four REU sites have responded that they will be able to accommodate an additional Psi Chi member. These sites are listed above, with the name of the institution, a contact person, and an e-mail address.

Students are encouraged to review the NSF/REU website as well as the websites of the individual programs to learn more about this program. Visit the REU sites at www.nsf.gov/home/crssprgm/reu and click on the "Search for an REU Site" link. Grants in the field of psychology are listed under both "Biological Sciences" and "Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences."
