Drs. Virginia Andreoli Mathie and Drew Appleby were recently honored as Psi Chi's latest additions to its prestigious roll of Distinguished Members. The honorees received special recognition at the recent 2008 APA Conventions. Read about each Distinguished Member.
AWARDS DEADLINE: DECEMBER 1
The deadline for four important Psi Chi awards is December 1, 2008. This awards deadline includes awards for advisor and chapter recognition, and for the best research submitted to the 2009 APA and APS National Conventions. More information is available on the Psi Chi website.
OUTSTANDING CHAPTERS NEEDED
Do you have an outstanding Psi Chi chapter? Were you a Model Chapter Award recipient for 2007-08? Could your chapter use $500? If you answered yes any of these questions, you should consider nominating your chapter for a Regional Chapter Award. Applications are due online on December 1. There are a total of 12 awards available; that is 2 awards per region with 1 award being reserved for a large school and 1 award being reserved for a small school. Each winning chapter receives a check for $500 and a plaque. Complete submission instructions are available online. Email questions about the program.
BENEFITS OF PSI CHI MEMBERSHIP: APS & APA OFFERS
Psi Chi is pleased to announce the Association for Psychological Science (APS) and American Psychological Association (APA) are continuing their special offers to Psi Chi members! APS is offering a discounted student affiliate membership rate of $25, while APA is offering a free copy of the Publication Manual to first-time Psi Chi students and faculty who join APA. Learn more about each offer and the benefits of joining each organization as a student member.
INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY AVAILABLE WITH APA'S SCIENCE DIRECTORATE
Psi Chi has partnered with the APA's Science Directorate to offer an internship during the summer that is exclusive to Psi Chi undergraduate members. Applications are due online by January 15, 2009. Since official transcripts and letters of recommendation are required elements of the application, interested members are encouraged to collect their application materials early so they can be submitted prior to the end of the fall semester. Complete submission instructions can be found online. Email questions about the program.
SIX APS SUMMER RESEARCH GRANTS AVAILABLE FOR 2009
Psi Chi is pleased to be partnering with the Association for Psychological Science (APS) to offer six summer research grants again in 2009. Each grant provides the student with a $3,500 stipend to conduct research with an APS sponsor over the summer. The sponsor receives $1,500, making the total value of each grant $5,000. This spring, APS will provide Psi Chi a list of APS members who are willing to sponsor a student for the summer to conduct research. This list will be posted on Psi Chi's website. Interested members can refer to the list and contact sponsors to arrange summer projects. Ideally, applicants will apply to work with mentors in institutions outside of their own institution. Preference will be given to projects that are spearheaded by the grant applicant, encompass all aspects of the research process, and might result in a first-authored publication or presentation by the applicant. The deadline for submissions for this grant is March 1. Complete details can be obtained on Psi Chi's website.
NLC UPDATE
The Psi Chi National Council has announced that up to four people per chapter are now allowed to register for Psi Chi's National Leadership Conference in January. Some fully and partially funded slots are still available on a first-come, first-serve basis, so enroll now!
For the initial registration period only two people were allowed to register per chapter, one Faculty Advisor and one student, who was either the chapter President or President-Elect. Psi Chi's National Council recently voted to allow up to four people to register, two Faculty Advisors, and two students (the chapter's President and President-Elect).
Please go to Psi Chi's website for online registration. Be sure that your chapter's current officer slate has been registered with Psi Chi's National Office by printing the Chapter Officers and Activities Report form and filling it out, and FAXing or mailing it to the National Office, OR online under Chapter Administration.
This message is the 140th in a series of email news digests from the Psi Chi National Office. Psi Chi sends this digest to all chapters and those members who choose to subscribe. Chapter officers and advisors should share relevant news with your chapter's members.
