Eye on Psi Chi: Winter 2003

A Psi Chi Tribute to
Raymond D. Fowler

Associate Editor

After 13 momentous years, Dr. Fowler steps down as the chief executive officer and executive vice president of the American Psychological Association. Fowler's service as APA's CEO was marked by tremendous growth and remarkable accomplishments that will influence the APA and the world of psychology for many years to come. Psi Chi congratulates Dr. Fowler on his numerous achievements and successful career at APA, thanks him for his friendship toward Psi Chi and his past leadership as a Psi Chi Southeastern Regional Vice-President and Psi Chi National Council member, and wishes him the best in his future endeavors.

On December 31, 2002, Raymond D. Fowler, PhD, stepped down from his position as chief executive officer and executive vice president of the American Psychological Association. All of us in Psi Chi extend our very best wishes to Dr. Fowler and congratulate him for his outstanding accomplishments and 13 years of exemplary leadership at APA.

Ray Fowler was inducted into Psi Chi on March 4, 1954, by the chapter at Pennsylvania State University, where Fowler was a doctoral student. After receiving his PhD, he returned to the University of Alabama, where he had received his bachelor's (1952) and master's (1953) degrees. Dr. Fowler was integrally involved in reviving the Psi Chi chapter at Alabama, which was one of Psi Chi's charter chapters but had been inactive since 1938. A "running psychologist" even back then, he literally helped to get the chapter "up and running," organizing the "Psi Chi Run for Mental Health," a regular feature of Alabama's program of chapter activities. When he moved to the University of Tennessee in 1986, he was also involved in stimulating activity within the Psi Chi chapter there.

Dr. Fowler was elected to two terms as Psi Chi's Southeastern regional vice-president, serving from 1980-1984. As a member of the Psi Chi National Council, he was involved not only with Psi Chi's national governance, but also by heading the Psi Chi activities of the Southeastern region. During his first year as Southeastern VP he organized a "Psi Chi Day" at the SEPA convention, which provided an opportunity for undergraduates to come into contact with various graduate programs and faculty members. This idea has spread and developed into the graduate school information exchanges that are an important part of Psi Chi regional programs to this day.

Dr. Fowler has been a speaker and participant in Psi Chi programs on many occasions, and his reputation as a friend and supporter of students is legendary. In 1999, Psi Chi recognized Dr. Fowler by naming him a Psi Chi Distinguished Member, the honor society's highest distinction.

Dr. Fowler's monumental record of success as APA's CEO has been documented at length in other publications, particularly in recent articles in APA's Monitor on Psychology, which we encourage all Psi Chi members to read. Psi Chi echoes the sentiments of all those who have praised Dr. Fowler for his outstanding accomplishments at APA. We thank him, as well, for his many years of friendship and service to Psi Chi.
