RESOURCES: Diversity Matters

Psi Chi values diversity in our membership and in the scholarly pursuits of our members. The Society strongly encourages attention to multicultural populations and issues such as racial/ethnic minorities, the LGBTQ+ community, social and economic class, nontraditional and first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities.

Strategies to Promote Diversity

Encourage People of Different Backgrounds to Join
Let individuals with diverse backgrounds know that your chapter is accepting of all types of people by sending them a special membership invitation. Here is an updated template letter for inviting all potential members, edited by Psi Chi's Diversity Committee, that you can use for wording.

Get Involved in Multicultural Research
Volunteer to join Psi Chi’s Network for International Collaboration Exchange (NICE). And remember: Psi Chi Journal welcomes student and faculty empirical research about diversity and all other areas of psychological science. Below, you’ll find some sample articles that highlight important topics and areas related to diversity, inclusion, and multiculturalism.

Connect With International Chapters
See our International Chapters, view International Opportunities, and learn about upcoming International Meetings and Events. Also, tell your chapter members what they have to gain from travel abroad experiences.

Unite With Local Groups That Support Diverse Students
Make connections with your school’s international student office, multicultural student office, disability support office, and other offices that support different communities.

Ask chapter officers to reach out to leaders of different communities such as the LGBTQ community, racial/ethnic minority student communities, and groups that represent different religious affiliations.

Promote awareness of Psi Chi for psychology students in these organizations and offices. For example, invite the students to presentations about applying to graduate school, getting involved in psychology research and service on campus, and becoming a member of Psi Chi!
