International History

International History
Psi Chi has a long history of international involvement even though the Society did not change from national to "Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology" until 2009. In fact, Psi Chi was originally founded in 1929 at the Ninth International Congress of Psychology at Yale University in Connecticut.

Since then, international activities were often the result of a particular presidents initiative. For example, 196263 was designated Psi Chi’s "International Year" during Dr. Roger Russell's presidency. With Dr. Charles Spielbergers 198083 presidency, Psi Chi assisted U.S. psychology students interested in studying abroad. During the presidencies of Drs. Slater Newman (199798) and Harold Takooshian (1998–99), there was a good deal of international activity including the Summer 1998 issue of the Eye on Psi Chi (Vol. 2, No. 4), which boldly proclaimed Dr. Slater's president's message "Internationalizing Psi Chi" on the front cover with the word psychology appearing in 20 languages.

Psi Chi added the international affiliate option to the Constitution in 1985. The first international affiliate, University of British Columbia in Canada, was approved that year, but the faculty advisor decided not to install the chapter because the international exchange rate of currency made the modest U.S. dues excessive in their currency. Not until 2003 was the first international affiliate chapter at University of Victoria in Canada chartered. By the time chapters voted to become international in 2009, we also had affiliate chapters at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez and the National University of Ireland, Galway. These three affiliate chapters immediately entered full chapter status. Today, Psi Chi has approved 16 chapters in 11 countries.
