Psi Chi Story: John Benicasco
  May 22, 2017

Let’s all congratulate member John Benicasco for receiving one of our very first Psi Chi Scholarships. Below, John answers a few questions about how the scholarship helped him and his experiences with our Professional Organization in general.

How did your Psi Chi Scholarship make a difference in your education?

As a former foster youth, I really rely on scholarships and financial aid to make my education possible. So first and foremost, the Psi Chi scholarship helped ensure that I could continue my education. Second, I was honored to have been awarded this scholarship, and it inspired me to keep working hard and doing my best.

What would you say to those who donated to help make Psi Chi Scholarships possible?

Psi Chi is a valuable organization; it has helped so many students advance their careers and educations by giving them the chance to perform research and work with their professors. Additionally, Psi Chi supports student success and has really helped me personally. I want to thank everyone who made that possible.

As a college student, why was it important for you to become a Psi Chi member?

There are several reasons why I wanted to join Psi Chi. Psi Chi gave me a chance to interact more closely with professors and other dedicated students, and offered opportunities in the form of access to a journal (that I would be able to attempt to publish in) and grants/scholarships. In addition, I feel proud to have tangible evidence of my hard work and dedication to the study of psychology.

What are your future aspirations?

I am working on figuring that out, admittedly! I am interested deeply in helping people, in using my education to better the world, and there are various ways I may want to do that. Wherever this journey takes me, though, I want to keep learning and using my skills to help others.

Would you, in the future, consider giving back to Psi Chi financially to pay it forward for other students like yourself?

Absolutely! Psi Chi has helped me get where I am today (and will help me attain what I will attain in the future), so it is only natural to want to give back to support the organization as well as the future generation of psychology.

How else can you and others Give Back to Psi Chi?

Psychology students, like all students, often feel pulled in multiple directions or have a general lack of a sense of where they want to go in life. I think students benefit a lot just from having accomplished professionals to talk to or provide guidance as needed. Being available to answer student questions (perhaps through an alumni network like Brockport's Psychology Department maintains) or give advice is very much appreciated.
