2008 Psi Chi/MPA Call for Papers (Submissions)

Call for Papers
Psi Chi Midwestern Region

May 1–3, 2008
Chicago, Illinois

Students are invited to submit proposals to the Psi Chi Program that is held in conjunction with the 2007 Midwestern Psychological Association (MPA) meeting. Psi Chi submissions should be sent electronically to mwpsichi@uwlax.edu.

The deadline for submissions is November 2, 2007 at 5:00 p.m. CST.
Submissions will be reviewed by at least two reviewers from colleges and universities from the Psi Chi Midwest region. Submissions that are accepted for the program will be a part of a Psi Chi poster session at MPA, most likely on May 1. The top submissions from Psi Chi members (as judged by the reviewers) will be designated as Psi Chi Midwestern Regional Research Award winners. These students will receive a cash award and will present their findings at a poster session at MPA most likely on May 2.

You must be a member of Psi Chi to be eligible for a Regional Research Award, but membership is not required to participate in the poster session. Works in progress are encouraged. You do not need to have completed your study to submit.

Send all submissions to mwpsichi@uwlax.edu. Please do not send inquiries to this address--only send submissions. If you have questions about your proposal or the program, please send them to morgan.bets@uwlax.edu.

NOTE: Although the instructions refer to an abstract, it may be more helpful for you to think about your submission as a summary.  The Psi Chi Midwest Steering Committee has prepared the following document that we highly encourage you to read: Tips for Submitting to MPA.

Instructions for Submission - Psi Chi submissions follow the MPA format

Send your submission via email with three word processor attachments (Microsoft Word is preferable). In the subject line of the email, please type the first author's last name. The three attachments and what to title them are described below:

Attachment 1
Name of "Attachment 1" document: First Author's Last Name, Basic Information

Basic Information
    a. Title of talk
    b. Area (e.g., cognitive, developmental, social, clinical)
    c. Student authors' names and institutions
    d. First author's address, phone, and email
    e. Please indicate if the first author is a Psi Chi member

Faculty Sponsor
    a. Name of faculty sponsor
    b. Faculty sponsor's address, phone, and email

Attachment 2
Name of "Attachment 2" document: First Author's Last Name, Short Abstract

Please make the short abstract 50 words or less. In a word processor program (e.g., Microsoft Word), create a document that includes the following four items:

  • The title using upper and lower case followed by a period. (Capitalize first letters only, but do not capitalize conjunctions, articles, or short prepositions.)
  • The authors' names in ALL CAPS with commas between all entries and an ampersand (&) between the penultimate and last entry. (These should be the student(s) who conducted the research, not the faculty sponsor.) Put institutional affiliation after the last author's name (unless each author has a different affiliation, in which case put the proper affiliation after each name). The institution is typed in upper and lower case.
  • The faculty sponsor's name in parentheses, followed by a comma and the words "Faculty Sponsor."
  • The short abstract.
Example of Short Abstract:

Forgiveness and Justice: Emotional Effects.

LINDSEY ROOT & AMY SATO, Hope College (Charlotte Witvliet, Faculty Sponsor)

This study measured the impact of forgiveness, punitive justice, and restorative justice on a victim's response to a burglar.  Measures of forgiveness, empathy, avoidance and revenge indicated positive emotional responses due to intentional forgiveness compared to no forgiveness. Restorative justice yielded more positive effects than punitive justice or no justice.

Attachment 3
Name of "Attachment 3" document: First Author's Last Name, Long Abstract

This document should be an abstract not to exceed 400 words. In addition to the abstract, one page of references and/or tables/figures (if needed) may be submitted. The tables, figures, or references do not count toward the 400-word total. If only references are included, they can be placed at the bottom of the abstract if space allows or included on an extra page. Use the following format:
  • Title of Submission
  • Area (e.g., cognitive, developmental, social, clinical)
  • Long abstract (double-spaced), addressing;
                -- Problem or major purpose
                -- Procedure
-- Results (to date) or expected results
                -- Conclusions and implications
  • References, tables, figures if needed
Do NOT include authors' names or affiliations on the long abstract. This document is the one that will be sent out for masked review.

A submission will be judged on the extent to which it conforms to the proper form and length described above, the quality and originality of the study, and the clarity of the long abstract.
