Midwestern Regional Fall Letter (2004)

September 2004

Dear Psi Chi Officers, Members, and Faculty Advisors:

Welcome back to school and what I trust will be an exciting and productive year for you. This fall letter contains important information about submitting Psi Chi conference proposals to the 2005 Midwestern Psychological Association (MPA) meeting. Please share this letter with students, officers, and faculty advisors.

Psi Chi Submissions to 2005 MPA Meeting
The enclosed Call for Papers contains information about student submissions to the Psi Chi program of MPA. The deadline for submission is November 5, 2004. The Psi Chi student deadline is different than the deadline for regular MPA submissions. Send all submissions electronically to midwestpsichi@hope.edu. Please do not send inquiries to this address--only send submissions. If you have questions about your proposal or the program, please send them to vanderstoep@hope.edu. Specific submission instructions are found in the attached materials. Submissions from Psi Chi student members will automatically be considered for a Regional Research Award. Poster sessions will likely take place on May 5. Regional Research Award winners will present their papers on May 5 and 6.

Consider Attending MPA: Palmer House, Chicago, May 5-7, 2005
I am in the process of planning the Psi Chi program, which will include presentations by the Regional Research Award winners and student poster sessions. Other sessions will likely include applying to and surviving graduate school, maintaining Psi Chi chapter vitality, and funding opportunities for your research. If you have specific ideas about the program, please e-mail me your suggestions (vanderstoep@hope.edu). I am very excited to announce that the Psi Chi Distinguished Speaker for the Midwest Region this year will be Dr. John Cacioppo of the University of Chicago. Dr. Cacioppo is internationally known for his research on attitudes, emotion, and social neuroscience. Psi Chi is very fortunate to have him presenting for us at MPA.

Psi Chi Faculty Advisors
Chapter faculty advisors are invited to attend the Psi Chi advisor appreciation lunch, tentatively scheduled for Friday, May 6, at MPA. The lunch will take place at The French Quarter in the Palmer House Hilton, the site of the conference. It is a chance for Psi Chi to thank you for your work, for you to get to know other advisors, and for you to share ideas about teaching, research, and advising. Psi Chi National Past-President Dr. Martha Zlokovich, current Psi Chi President Dr. Chris Koch, and Psi Chi CEO Dr. Virginia Mathie will be in attendance. An invitation will be sent in the spring.

With all good wishes,

Scott VanderStoep, Ph.D.
Psi Chi Midwestern Vice-President
