Southeastern Regional Spring 2008 Letter

Dear Fellow Psi Chi Members, Chapter Officers, and Faculty Advisors:

The 54th annual meeting of The Southeastern Psychological Association (SEPA) will be held at the Westin Charlotte, in Charlotte, North Carolina from March 6-9.  I hope you will be able to attend all the presentations, workshops, socials, and gatherings organized for you by the SEPA Council and the Psi Chi National Office.

As Vice President of Psi Chi for the Southeast Region, I, along with lots of help from the Psi Chi National Office, organized the Psi Chi portion of the program at SEPA, which features programs and activities with our Psi Chi members in mind.  I hope you get a chance to meet with Psi Chi staff on Friday morning from 8:30-10:00.  A bookmark, highlighting all of the Psi Chi meetings and activities, will be handed out at that time.  These bookmarks will be available at the hospitality suite if you don’t get a chance to pick one up.

I, especially, would like to draw your attention to the Psi Chi Invited Address to be given by Dr. Karyl Swartz, this year’s Distinguished Speaker.  She will deliver a presentation entitled, “What Can We Learn about Cognition from Great Apes?”  Dr. Swartz, a psychologist and Great Ape Trust of Iowa scientist, has spent the last 30 years collaborating with non-human primates on memory and self-recognition research, and will begin work this year with The Trust’s colony of bonobos.  The Great Ape Trust of Iowa is a scientific research facility dedicated to understanding the origins and future of culture, language, tools and intelligence. When completed, the Trust will be the largest great ape facility in North America and one of the first, worldwide, to include all four types of great ape, bonobos, chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans, for noninvasive, interdisciplinary studies of their cognitive and communicative capabilities.  You don’t want to miss this presentation!

Additionally, I have arranged for a Psi Chi Hospitality Suite (Brevard Room, 3rd floor) which will be open Friday and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.  Coffee, tea, lemonade, soda, and snacks will be available for all Psi Chi members and their guests so please stop by, often, to meet other Psi Chi members, officers, and advisors.

Awards!

Fifteen awards will be presented at the CEPO/PsiChi Undergraduate Research Program poster sessions on Friday morning in Poster Rooms 1, 2 and 3.

Psi Chi Representation

I am serving as Psi Chi’s liaison to APA’s Board of Scientific Affairs. I will attend their spring meeting which will be held from March 28-30, 2008 in Washington, D.C.  Additionally, I have agreed to serve as Psi Chi’s senior judge at the 2008 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Atlanta, Georgia May 12-16, 2008.   I will be sure to keep you posted as to the outcomes of the meetings and the fair.

Important Deadline!

It is time to elect a Vice President for your southeast region, as well as a new Psi Chi President.  The last day to vote is March 15.  You can go to the Psi Chi website www.psichi.org/news/ to do so.  The third link down, labeled 2008 Psi Chi National Elections, will provide you with voting information.

Don’t hesitate to contact me if I can help you, in any way.  Enjoy the Southeastern Psychological Association 54th annual meeting and I hope to see you there!
