Western Regional Fall Letter (2007)

Dear Fellow Psi Chi Members, Chapter Officers, and Faculty Advisors,

Greetings and welcome back to another exciting year for Psi Chi. Congratulations to our newly inducted members of Psi Chi and to the new chapters in the Western region.

Also, congratulations to the award winners from the Western region this past year. Many qualified presentations were considered for Regional Research Awards at the regional meeting of the Western Psychological Association (WPA), which was held in the beautiful city of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada (May 3-6, 2007). The 12 award winners in the Western Region included (in alphabetical order): Ayesha R. Brookshier, Natalie C. Bruce, Elide S. Flores, Eureka Kasthuri, Michelle A. Low, Marisa Luna, Pricilla Miranda, Adriana J. Nevado, Amanda C. Potoczak, Samantha J. Simmons, Ashley Williamson, and Brandon A. Yabko. Congratulations to all of you!

For the chapters that submitted applications for awards, I applaud your efforts and hope you continue to consider yourself, your chapter or your chapter leaders for these awards. For chapters who have yet to submit an application in past years or this year, know that Psi Chi has many awards that are not given out due to lack of applications. Also be thinking about the awards that have spring deadlines (Summer Research Grants, APS Summer Research Grants, FBI NCAVC Internship Grant), and a May 1 deadline (Guildford Undergraduate Research Awards, Allyn & Bacon Psychology Awards, Erlbaum Awards in Cognitive Science, Kay Wilson Leadership Award). Please visit www.psichi.org/awards for a detailed list of awards, grants, and deadlines.

The 2008 regional meeting of WPA will convene April 10-13, 2008, at the Hyatt Regency in Irvine, California. Preregistration for these events ends on March 15, 2008. The submission deadline for symposia, papers, or poster presentations is November 15, 2007, and can be submitted at www.westernpsych.org. For those students interested in being a WPA student representative, the WPA Student Council is looking for those wanting to be more involved. Please contact Allison Vaughn (Allison.Vaughn@psych.utah.com) for more information.

Based on feedback and attendance, the WPA program will again include a graduate school symposium and exchange. We will also again hold a Psi Chi faculty advisor appreciation breakfast. Space will be limited for this luncheon so be on the lookout for future notifications. We also expect to have a Psi Chi poster session and a cosponsored session with CUPP.

As a final reminder, please have your chapters consider involvement in any or all of Psi Chi's National Service Projects, which may help chapters focus their community service projects toward something the National Council feels is important for our entire organization. These projects include: Adopt-A-Shelter, Food Drives, Habitat for Humanity, UNICEF, and the Archives of the History of American Psychology. Further information on all of these projects can be found at www.psichi.org/chapters/serviceprojects.asp.

I look forward to meeting many of you at upcoming events. Do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions concerning Psi Chi opportunities or events.

Sincerely,

Ngoc H. Bui, Ph.D.
