Eye on Psi Chi: Fall 2007

New Beginnings
Lisa Mantooth, Psi Chi Executive Officer

I hope you have enjoyed your summer. Time passes so quickly with each year. This summer has been no exception and here at the Psi Chi National Office, we have been working on new ideas for Eye on Psi Chi.

The Eye has added some new regular features that I am sure both the students and faculty will appreciate. Beginning with this issue, we will feature at least one article on career tracks in psychology. Karen Appleby introduces us to sports psychology (page 22), a very interesting career path within the field. In upcoming issues, we will feature a different path in hopes of educating our readers on the many career options available to psychology majors.

Another feature, beginning in the winter issue, will be called "Ask the Faculty Advisor.” We have assembled a panel of faculty advisors who will answer questions you may have pertaining to issues in your chapter. These questions could range from "how do you get students involved in a service project” to "when is the best time to hold chapter elections?” The panelists are from successful chapters across the nation. If you have a question, please email me at and I will forward your question to the panel. Each issue will feature questions and answers designed to strengthen and grow our chapters.

As an effort to draw your attention to the many awards and grants provided by Psi Chi, I have written an article entitled "Free Money (page 8).” I hope you will find it informative. Psi Chi grants and awards are a tremendous resource to Psi Chi members. I would like to see more members applying for funds and taking advantage of this invaluable program.

Over the summer as I was reviewing annual chapter reports, I noticed that chapters are requesting information on how and where to get funding for conferences. Hopefully, Dr. Betsy Morgan’s article (page 28) will assist you in finding funds to travel to regional and national conferences. And remember, it is not too soon to begin planning for traveling to the spring regional conferences.

I would love to hear from you if you have any ideas for career track articles or if you have questions for our panel of faculty advisors. I wish you continued success as you continue striving toward your educational goals!

Lisa Mantooth is a veteran of nonprofit management leaving a position as executive director of the American Red Cross—Hiwassee Chapter to join the Psi Chi National Office. She is very excited about her future with Psi Chi stating, "I feel that my entire career has led up to the responsibility of this position. I look forward to my future here, but I am also very cognizant of the history and the women, such as Ruth Cousins, who have left their invaluable mark on Psi Chi.”

Lisa received her bachelor of science degree from Tusculum College (TN) in organizational management and has an MBA from Regis University (CO). Aside from her professional life, she is married to Chris Mantooth and they have two active sons—Byron and Spencer.

Very community minded, Mrs. Mantooth is President-Elect of Bradley Sunrise Rotary Club where Habitat for Humanity and Angel Flight are the service projects. She feels that the Rotary motto, "Service above Self,” epitomizes her professional and personal life.
