Southwestern Regional Spring Letter
Dear Psi Chi members,
It is now officially spring, which is the busiest time of the year for Psi Chi! It’s time for regional conventions, new chapter officer elections, and for many, graduation from undergraduate and graduate programs. Congratulations and best of success to all graduates as you move on to a new set of challenges (and accomplishments).
I hope many of you will be able to attend the Southwestern Psychological Association meeting in Wichita, KS (April 10–12). We have a full program planned and encourage all members to partake. We have sessions for current student members and officers, for faculty advisors about chapter leadership, and for all members including alumni members about the benefits of Psi Chi membership. Remember that your Psi Chi membership is a lifetime membership; we want you all to continue to be involved.
In addition to our poster and oral paper sessions, our Distinguished Lecturer will be Dr. Pamela Keel (Florida State University), who is an expert in eating disorders. Dr. Keel will speak about the newly identified “purging disorder.” We are also featuring a presentation by Psi Chi’s Diversity Advisory Committee member Dr. Julia Lechuga (University of Texas at El Paso), who will talk about the cultural factors influencing mother-daughter decision making to obtain the HPV vaccine.
We typically have a session dedicated to graduate school information, and this year, we will have an hour-long symposium addressing several graduate school-relevant topics, followed by an open question and answer session. Bring your questions about graduate school, and our panel will give you the best answers we can.
The Psi Chi program at SWPA has been assembled with the help of the regional steering committee, comprised of Dr. Shawn Charlton (University of Central Arkansas), Dr. Grant Benham (University of Texas–Pan American), and student member Danielle Umland (University of Central Arkansas). Not only are they all chairing sessions at SWPA, but the faculty members of the committee have reviewed abstracts for both acceptance to the program and the regional research awards. Dr. Chuck Nichols (Loyola University New Orleans) assisted with the regional research award reviews. Please give them all a round of applause!
Other News and Notes
We have a new chapter in the Southwestern region. We welcome the students and faculty of Texas A&M University–San Antonio. Their chapter advisor is Dr. Amy Dicke Bohmann.
Remember that Psi Chi offers numerous awards and grants. Please check that part of the Psi Chi website for details HERE.
Remember to order your graduation regalia. As mentioned at the outset, this is a busy time at the Central Office, so get your orders in as early as possible. Visit the Psi Chi store HERE.
The Psi Chi website has new sections about conference attendance, promoting your study, diversity, and searching Psi Chi publications.
Also check and/or submit to Psi Chi Journal of Psychological Research. Please read the biweekly Psi Chi Digest and Eye on Psi Chi magazine; those are full of useful information and tips. There is a new Digest for advisors, too, to help advisors guide their chapters.
Lastly, let me mention that it is easy to keep up with Psi Chi news, events, innovations, and benefits through social media. Links to pages moderated by the Central Office are included with every Digest e-mailed to members. To get more regional information, just “like” our regional Facebook page.
To the students: best wishes for a successful conclusion to the spring semester. To all: stay involved with Psi Chi. It’s a great organization!
See you soon in Wichita!
