APS Summer Research Grants
What is it?

Six grants for Psi Chi students and APS sponsors to work together to complete research. Each grant is divided into

  • a $3,500 stipend for the Psi Chi student
  • a $1,500 stipend for the APS faculty member sponsor

The student also receives a free APS student membership until December 31 of the year the funds are awarded.

How does it work?

  • An undergraduate Psi Chi member and a faculty member who is a member of APS outline a summer research project.
  • They apply for the grant.
  • They conduct research.

Who should apply?

  • Psi Chi undergraduates who will still be in school the semester following the summer the research is completed.
  • People who have identified a faculty member who is a member of APS and willing to be a sponsor.
  • Students who have a great summer research project in mind.

The application portal will open approximately 30 days before the deadline.

2011–12 winner

"This APS Summer Research Grant definitely helped me both professionally and personally. Personally, it funded my expensive research project which would have been difficult to fund without. A good research project can be costly, both mentally and financially, so finding aid through grants can help ease this process immensely. Professionally, it helped to set me apart from other candidates when I applied to graduate schools. A grant is not only a source of funding but it is also an accomplishment and, in today’s competitive world, graduate schools and employers value these accomplishments greatly. Obtaining a grant demonstrates initiative and dedication, and it definitely scores points in the eyes of top schools and companies.”
