Welcome to Psi Chi

Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology, was founded in 1929 with a mission to encourage excellence in scholarship and advance the science of psychology. More than three-quarters of a million lifetime members have joined in this worthwhile cause including Distinguished Members such as Drs. Albert Bandura, B. F. Skinner, and Phillip Zimbardo. A few popular Membership Benefits include international recognition for academic excellence, as well as access to our three publications and more than $400,000 in annual awards and grants.

Lifetime Membership Is Open to:

  1. Undergraduate and graduate students majoring or minoring in psychology or a closely related field at an institution with a Psi Chi chapter may join if they met the Society's minimum requirements and any additional chapter requirements.
  2. Transfer students who meet regular student membership requirements may check with their local chapter advisor for eligibility specifics. At least 12 semester hours or equivalent in psychology coursework at their new institution is required unless otherwise specified according to that chapter's bylaws.
  3. Full-time faculty members of an institution with a Psi Chi chapter may be elected by the local chapter. A doctorate in psychology or a closely related field is required to become a Psi Chi primary faculty advisor. Coadvisors or faculty alumni members may have a master's or doctorate.
  4. Alumni who graduated at an institution before a Psi Chi chapter was established may be elected to membership by that local chapter if they meet the current criteria for student membership based on their final transcript at that institution.

Individuals become members by joining their local Psi Chi chapter. Our specific membership requirements and instructions are available HERE.

After potential members are approved by their faculty advisor, all 1,130+ Psi Chi chapters approve and process their new members on our online system. The Psi Chi Central Office, located in Chattanooga, Tennessee, manages the Society under the direction of the Board of Directors, who are Psi Chi members elected by the chapters to guide the Organization.

Psi Chi is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies and is an affiliate of the American Psychological Association (APA) and the Association for Psychological Science (APS). Our sister honor society is Psi Beta, the national honor society in psychology for community and junior colleges.

The Psi Chi Central Office is located at 651 East 4th Street in Chattanooga, Tennessee, adjacent to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga campus.
